Getting to Utsunomiya

Utsunomiya sits about 50 minutes north of Tokyo Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen. Every route from either Tokyo airport is the same two moves: get to Tokyo, Ueno or Omiya, then take the Shinkansen north.

Haneda is the closer airport, at roughly an hour and a half door to door against about two and a quarter hours from Narita. Tochigi Sports Park is then a further half hour or so from JR Utsunomiya Station.

Journey times here are typical rather than a timetable, and fares are rounded. Services and prices change, so check the operator before you travel, and check the last service back before you head out in the evening.

From Narita

About 2 hours 15 door to door

Two rail routes, both changing onto the Tohoku Shinkansen. Note that the Narita Express does not stop at Ueno or Omiya: from Narita, Tokyo Station is the interchange.

Direct airport coach

No changes, but book ahead

The Maronie-go coach runs from both Tokyo airports straight to JR Utsunomiya Station's west exit. It is slower than the train from Haneda but competitive from Narita, and for anyone with kit bags it removes every transfer and platform change.

  • Narita Airport to JR Utsunomiya Station

Serves all three Narita terminals, arriving at the west exit

    about 2 h 30about ¥5,000

  • Haneda Airport to JR Utsunomiya Station

    Also stops at Tobu-Utsunomiya Station

    about 2 h 40about ¥4,800

  • Reservation required

Seats are limited and must be booked, up to a month ahead, with online booking closing the evening before. There is no English booking page, so allow time or ask the organizers.

Tokyo to Utsunomiya

About 50 minutes by Shinkansen

Join the Tohoku Shinkansen at Tokyo, Ueno or Omiya. Tokyo is the southern end of the line, so there is no Shinkansen from Shinagawa.

Check that your train stops at Utsunomiya. Only Yamabiko, Nasuno and Tsubasa call there, and a few of those run through. Hayabusa and Komachi do not stop, so a reserved seat on one will carry you well past Utsunomiya.

  • Tohoku Shinkansen

Tokyo, Ueno or Omiya to Utsunomiya with no changes, roughly every 15 to 30 minutes through the day

about 50 min from Tokyo42 min from Ueno23 min from Omiya

  • Or the local line

JR Utsunomiya Line, direct from Tokyo or Ueno via the Ueno-Tokyo Line. No reservation and no limited-express supplement, for roughly half the cost.

    about 2 hours

  • Rail passes

The nationwide Japan Rail Pass covers this Shinkansen in ordinary cars: the Nozomi and Mizuho exclusion applies to other lines. The JR EAST PASS covers all JR East lines and is sold in 5- or 10-day form.

  • IC cards

Suica and PASMO work on the Shinkansen only through JR East's Touch de Go, a free one-time registration for non-reserved seats, same day and one way. It cannot be used on Tsubasa, which is all-reserved.

  • Luggage

No oversized-baggage reservation is needed on the Tohoku Shinkansen: that rule is for the Tokaido and Sanyo lines. Storage is first come, first served.

To the ground

About 30 minutes from JR Utsunomiya Station

Tochigi Sports Park is about 6 km south-west of JR Utsunomiya Station, in the Nishikawada district. Buses leave from the station's west exit, not the east exit, which is the side the Shinkansen and the light rail use.

Utsunomiya's Lightline tram runs east from the station and goes nowhere near the ground, so don't pick a hotel for its tram access.

  • Bus from JR Utsunomiya Station, west exit

Kanto Bus from bays 11 and 12 towards Sports Park West. Not every service runs all the way to the park stop; off-peak you may alight at Nishikawada-higashi and walk about five minutes.

  • Taxi from JR Utsunomiya Station

    25 to 30 min

  • Nishikawada Station is not a shortcut

The nearest station is a 15-minute walk from the park, but it is on the Tobu Utsunomiya Line, which runs from Tobu-Utsunomiya Station, a different station about 1.6 km from the JR one where the Shinkansen arrives.

  • Driving

The park has several car parks, West and South First among them, with maps on the park's own access page.

  • Bus times changed on 1 October 2026

Kanto Bus revised its Utsunomiya timetables days before the tournament, including off-peak trips on the route to the ground, and moved some departure bays. Check the operator, or the timetable on the stop itself, rather than anything printed earlier.

Before you go

  • Weather

October in Utsunomiya averages a high of about 21°C and a low of about 13°C, with roughly 175 mm of rain across the month. Early kick-offs are genuinely chilly and the tournament is outdoors, so bring a layer and a rain cover.

  • Visas

Entry requirements depend on your nationality and change without notice. Check Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs before you book.

  • Staying on afterwards

The Japan Cup cycle race takes over Utsunomiya from 16 to 18 October 2026. It does not clash with match days, but rooms will be scarce for anyone extending their trip.
